This lovely knitted rainbow jersey is signed by Freddy Maertens, who added the dedication ‘With sympathy’ above his signature, indicating his respect for bike fans and their passion for racing.

Freddy Maertens was a cycling superstar, his meteoric career peaked in 1976, stumbled later, then he was great again in 1981 when he won a second road race world title, so a second year in the rainbow jersey, and a second green jersey in the Tour de France.

Maertens won nine classics, 36 Grand Tour stages, three green jerseys, two Belgian road race titles and one Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España. He holds the record, jointly, for stage wins in a single Tour de France with eight, and is sole leader of the Vuelta a Espana stage standings with 13 wins in a single edition.
